WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki is an energy healing modality originating in the early 20th century in Japan connecting with the universal life force energy that is present in all of us and all living things. With Reiki, we learn to connect with, channel and harmonize energy to support healing of the body, mind and spirit.
Reiki uses a combination of hands-off and hands-on healing - sending energy & intention through the palms of the hands - covering the 7 main Chakras (energy centers) of the body as a basis. When our chakras are balanced and open, they promote holistic health, vitality and well-being. When they are out of balance (over- or under- active), closed or blocked, they can cause dis-comfort & dis-ease at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
Intention is EVERYTHING! When you work with Reiki, you bring a clear and powerful intention that is directed to whatever healing is needed for the highest and greatest good.
MY JOURNEY WITH REIKI AND MOTHERHOOD
I first learned about Reiki while doing my yoga teacher training in Bali in November 2018. I had never heard of Reiki or energy healing more generally and was curious when I heard the amazing stories of my fellow yogis who had Reiki sessions and came back totally refreshed, grounded and clear.
It was there that I met my Reiki Master - Joanna Lewins - and started our beautiful journey together. I just knew instantly that she was supposed to be my teacher and that Reiki was a part of my path, passion and mission in life. I completed the Level I training with her in Bali, learning about the Chakra system; the basic hand-positions for self-healing and how to protect, cleanse and ground my energy.
From there I embarked on the traditional 21 days of Reiki self-healing, going into a deep, reflective process of healing old wounds, patterns and conditioning; releasing what no longer served me and rebalancing and re-energizing my system. I performed Reiki sessions on fellow hostel travelers as I backpacked throughout Southeast Asia and read every book I could on Reiki and the Chakras.
I completed my Level II Practitioner training in London in May 2019 where I learned the sacred Reiki symbols and how to offer sessions to paying clients. I soon began incorporating new elements into my Reiki sessions - adding voice & sound instruments, crystals, aromatherapy and tarot cards - really making my sessions my own.
During Covid I became pregnant with my first baby and used the opportunity to go inwards and deepen my personal practice and connection with Reiki, using it:
on my root chakra, to help me feel more secure, grounded and trusting of my body and what it is capable of;
on my my womb space, to clear stagnant, negative energy and old wounds;
on my belly, to connect with my baby and send her healing energy and love;
on my heart, to activate and expand my unconditional love for my baby and myself;
on my throat, to help me speak my truth, communicate my needs and boundaries and express my feelings - especially in difficult and uncomfortable moments;
on my third-eye, to deepen my connection with my intuition and trust myself, and
on my crown chakra, to remind me that I am connected to the Universal Life force and that I am supported by a deeper intelligence of life that always has my back.
Reiki was incredibly powerful and supportive to me during my postpartum period as well - helping me cope with the stress, anxiety and lack of sleep; when breastfeeding felt difficult (if not impossible); when I lost confidence in myself and when I lost communication and connection with my partner. I always had this powerful practice of Reiki to help guide me back to myself, back to balance - and at least to a moment or two of peace. I regularly use Reiki to calm my baby down when she is upset or unwell and to help her sleep.
In November 2021, I started an 11-week journey to become a Reiki Master - which was truly transformative and healing on so many levels and am currently completing my Reiki Teacher training which will enable me to teach and share my love for this magical medicine.
What I love so much about Reiki is that it is your own personal practice. You can make it truly and completely your own and use it to serve yourself and your family for the highest and greatest good. It also combines so beautifully and easily with other Alternative healing modalities like acupuncture, sound healing, yoga, meditation as well as Western medicine.
Reiki has brought me enormous trust, confidence and love in myself, my path and my gifts that I am here to share with the world; has helped me balance my desire to do, move forward and give with my ability to soften, surrender and receive; and to feel more peace, joy and acceptance in all that I do.
Reiki has been an enormous support to me throughout my motherhood journey. It is my deep desire to share this beautiful energy healing practice with all you mamas and mamas-to-be to improve your holistic health, vitality & well-being! Because you deserve it and are worth it!
MINI REIKI SELF-HEALING
Below are my 6 simple steps for a mini-Reiki self-healing, which you can do anytime, anywhere when you need a little energetic re-set & re-charge.
Step 1: Find a comfortable position seated or lying down with eyes closed, body soft & relaxed
Step 2: Take a few long slow breaths, lengthening the exhale
Step 3: Scan the body from head to toe noticing any feelings, sensations, thoughts, emotions (without judgment!)
Step 4: Rub hands together vigorously for 10 seconds, creating warmth & heat
Step 5: Place the hands on or hovering a few cm off the body wherever you feel you need it most - trust yourself
Step 6: Visualize sending positive energy, love & light through your hand palms - stay here for at least 10 breaths
Slowly come out when you are ready, deepening the breath, stretching & fluttering open the eyes.
Repeat as often and for as long as needed. You can also perform this on your children, partner, friends and family! Just take a moment to connect with them and then send your energy and positive intention through your hands to anywhere they need it. Enjoy 🙏
